I’ve been searching for a new car for awhile. Not out of need, I’m just looking for something new to replace my S60R. I’ve test driven a lot, only to find myself jaded by the selection of AWD/RWD Manual Offerings, that are fast, well-built, and maintain sleeper status.
Long story short, I want a Wrangler. Driven a few and they’re charming, honest, and fun. It’s not the type of fun I’m used to, but I love it. I love it enough I’ve actually listed my R on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , looking to buy something new within the next week or so.
So the search began for a new Wrangler. My first stop was at Valley Dodge in Boulder, where they have a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! w/ 45K, a lift, and a list price of $27,575. I knew the price was steep, but it’s within my budget (towards the top), and a lot of the stuff I want to do (lift) is already done. On the test drive, I reached into the glove box, only to find the original window sticker. MSRP: $27,180. I told this to the salesguy at the end of the ride, and he tried to justify to me why this one, with 45K and three years of use, including an accident has managed to appreciate in value...needless to say I walked out on them.
Afterwards, after spending hours on CL, Ebay, Cars.com, and Autotrader, I reached the epitome of why don’t I just buy new? Used 2012’s are like $2,000 less than their new counterpart. Chrysler never incentivizes Wrangler’s anyway.
I was about to buy new, until I found this guy:
It’s a 2012 Wrangler X with everything I want (power windows, hardtop, manual, uConnect) in a discontinued color (green). It’s Jeep Certified (7 year/100K warranty) with 21K. Moreover, it’s got some tasteful mods to it, drives great, and feels pretty much new. I’m able to get them to $24,300 for it.
While I love this one, I feel like an idiot for getting something maybe $3,000 off new price, when it’s nearly 4 years old, with 21k on it...would you bite the bullet and buy new for a few grand more, or get the used one in the color you want, with some mods, and a CPO Warranty?
On a side note, I’ve now been to three separate Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep dealers, and have come to a conclusion.... they all suck. I’ve never dealt with such stereotypical dealer processes (fat manager in a little room where the salesguy goes for a price, literally not able to walk a foot out of my car without being approached by a salesperson, why it’s the best time to buy spiels, etc).

Buy new. That price differential is worth it. Particularly with a Jeep, where the previous owner almost certainly took it off road just once to see what it could do (before he got it stuck and smashed the oil pan on something he misjudged in height.)
I owned a Wrangler a while back and loved it. Had the cloth top and I took that and the doors off every chance I got.

I say go used simply because it already includes the extended warranty which is an optional purchase when new.

Quite the jump from shopping for a luxury German sedan to the most ‘Murican of all vehicles :)
I say at this point you should probably just consider new.
Also, about your ebay listing: HARUMPH! I can get am automatic 2002 S60 with double the miles for only
$1100
, and according to this seller, it “starts right up!”

Wranglers are ridiculous when it comes to not losing their value. I have looked for a long time for a decent priced used one. They don’t exist. I would buy new if I wanted a late model.

You don’t need a lift, particularly with a 2-dr. I have taken our 2001, unlifted Cherokee off road (at Jeep Jamborees, alongside lots of lifted Wranglers) plenty of times with just a few rocker panel dents to show for it. The Wrangler has the Cherokee beat as far as standard approach and departure angles as well as ground clearance, so unless doing some serious rock crawling IMHO a lift is just for show.

This is getting to be common in almost all cars, but especially the ones that aren’t common. Even then, depreciation is so slow now that I cannot fathom why you’d buy used on anything short of a luxury car with crazy depreciation (the last type of car that seems to depreciate fairly quickly).
Five years ago I would have told people they were crazy if they claimed new was a better deal than used, but it has completely flipped. They used to depreciate far faster than a realistic residual value, but now they undervalue mileage and warranty.

Geez... those used prices are crazy. Worse than Canadian prices.
With that small price differential, I would rather buy a new base model. May cost the same or slightly more with fewer bells and whistles, but you get a full warranty. Then if you want to mod it, you can mod it the exact way you want.
I’m guessing the only way to save much money is to get the 2011 and older model with the much crappier 3.8L OHV engine.

If you do buy that used green one, get rid of that tacky angry eyes plastic thingy. Might as well slap on a pair of eye lashes on it if you keep that one.
Looks so out of place.

I would buy used even at a 4k difference IF it is certified and has a warranty that essentially gives you the same coverage as you would get on a new car. Plus as mentioned your saving money on mods already done assuming you pick a well done car.

I just went through the process of buying (and selling) a CPO 2012 Wrangler. I loved it the short while I had it, but be prepared to pay some money for one. They hold they value VERY well. Buying brand new might be better for those extra few dollars. Also, Jeep’s CPO and warranty programs are odd, and they’ll tell you that they’re not transferrable (WTF?!)
Careful getting one pre-modded though...
ALSO, I would buy your S60R in a heartbeat if I weren’t currently living in Manhattan. I looked high and wide for a manual one of those for a while.

Jeeps are awesome but special. They don’t depreciate. And you really cant get crazy good deals on new ones, oh and Mopar never gives financing specials.
Honestly buy new, used ones scare me. And they nearly cost the same.
Also look into Truecar. We were able to get them priced a few grand lower than new.Even if you dont have a truecar dealer tell the dealer what truecar pricing is..most every dealer will come in within $300 of that.
We almost bought a new loaded Willys Wheeler edition.

Going to a Jeep is a big enough change for me that I require a few creature comforts (ei. Power Windows/Locks). I would get a base model but I’m just not ready to do much sacrificing yet.

At first I thought the same thing - by the pictures it looks like one of those stupid hood visors. However, it’s an entirely different grill that cuts off the top of the headlamps. I can’t say I love it, but the reason for doing so is to improve visibility, as perfectly circular headlamps tend to be a) blinding to other drivers b) terrible for visibility.

I don’t like to think about it, but I’ve increased my budget enough that I’m in used S4 territory - the car I originally wanted. My issue with finding a performance car is that I’d prefer not to show up to work at my job, driving a nearly new Audi or BMW. It doesn’t look to good for the new ‘young guy’ at the company!

Making automotive decisions based on what other people think is kind of depressing though... It’s your money... It’s your car... I would say buying car for appearances (be it deterring attention or attracting it intentionally) is kind of un-oppo...

Just get the base model and to make up for the lack of luxury, get some velour seat covers.

I just remarked to my wife today that Wranglers hold their value so well, that there is no point in them buying used. I’d buy a new one, if I were you.
